Abstract

Introduction: Inhalant (glue-sniffing) disorder is a complex health condition, and the “craving” phenomenon is important for its diagnosis and withdrawal prediction. In several countries, inhalants occupy the first place of addiction preference. In recent years in Mexico, a high prevalence of consumption in women has been detected. Objective: For this reason, the present study's objective was to explore the clinical characteristics and cognitive functioning of inhalant users according to sex. Method: This was a Cross-sectional descriptive study, with fifty participants diagnosed with inhalant use disorder, divided into two groups, one with 31 men and one with 19 women. Data collection included applying clinical and cognitive instruments. Results: The clinical evaluation showed statistically significant scores compared to the normal parameters of the scales. Participants showed the presence of craving, frontal lobe signs, and sleep problems. In particular, women obtained higher scores in craving, with higher reports of sleep disorders and deficits in executive functions, mainly regarding planning. Discussion: Prevention and treatment programs must take into account the characteristics of the user and the particularities of the sexes in inhalant addiction.
