Abstract

Diabetic foot is one of the most common complications in people with diabetes, since approximately 25% of people with this condition will suffer a foot injury at some point in their lives. Moreover, it is necessary to transcend a curative model to a preventive one where the primary axis is self−care behaviors. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an online cognitive−behavioral program on knowledge of diabetes and the acquisition of self−care behaviors for the feet in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Six people participated aged from 40 to 74 years (M = 56.67, SD = 12.32) with confirmed diagnosis of T2DM. The intervention involved a synchronous online workshop format along six, two-hour sessions weekly. The intervention included psychoeducation, modeling, shaping, chaining, problem-solving, and self−instructions. The results indicate that knowledge related to the disease and foot self−care behaviors increased at the end of the workshop. We conclude that interventions based on education and behavioral modification applied in digital contexts can promote self−care behaviors.
