Abstract

Antecedents. In the American Continent, suicide has reached epidemic proportions in recent decades, becoming a serious public health concern. Objective. To analyze the death trend due to suicide in Mexico from 1980 to 2015, focusing on epidemiological and socio-demographic variables. Method. A longitudinal epidemiological time-series study collected data over 35 years (1980-2015). Results. In contrast to 1980, when 973 deaths occurred, in 2015, there were 6,421. In both periods, the percentage was similar, 80% in men and 20% in women. The main methods changed, with more hangings and less use of firearms and poisoning. Age-wise, a higher proportion occurred between 15 and 29 years, for both men and women. The states with the highest prevalence in 1980 were Tabasco and Veracruz; in 2015, they were the state of Mexico, Jalisco, and Guanajuato. Discussion. Significantly more suicides have been occurring in Mexico in the last 36 years, related to age group (under 20 and over 65) and sex (men), as well as changing methods to achieve it (hanging). These findings lead to recommend continuing to observe suicidal behavior, especially in young people between 15 and 29 years of age.
