Abstract

Background. Worldwide, anxiety and depression have been reported as common comorbid conditions in patients cared for in emergency departments. However, little has been published within the Mexican context in recent years. Objective. This study aimed to identify the frequency of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients admitted to a Mexican emergency department. Method. This was a retrospective study conducted in the emergency department of a general hospital in Mexico City. A total of 117 records of admitted patients between February and October in 2017 were reviewed. Participants responded to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Results. The HADS results showed that 42.7% of participants tested positive for anxiety based on the cut-off point. In comparison, 46.2% tested positive for depression. According to the MINI and the frequency of Major Depressive Episodes among patients was 39.3%. In contrast, the frequency of Generalized Anxiety Disorder was 22.2%. Discussion. The findings show slightly higher data than those reported earlier in other studies, including some in Latin America, positioning them as common mental health problems in patients in the emergency area. It is possible to conclude that anxiety and depression are frequent disorders in patients hospitalized in the emergency service of a public Mexican hospital. However, more research is needed to verify these results under various specific situations.
